Automotive Terms You May Not Know

coolest flying cars

A basic understanding of automotive terms will help you understand the various components of your vehicle. These are the Coil springs (Shock absorber), Drive axle, and Carbureted motor. Let's look closer at these terms and discover more about what they refer to. This article will also cover some terms that you might hear about in the automotive industry. Read on to discover more about the different parts of your car. You might not know many terms associated with automotive terminology.

Coil springs

A coil spring can be described as a piece that is tightly wound from metal and is attached to a suspension system. The manufacturer can make it either hard or soft, and the performance of the coil spring is affected by a variety of parameters. The vehicle's dynamic performance and handling will be affected by any change in these parameters. A spring's overall performance is affected by how many coils it has. This spring is an essential component of a suspension system. It is crucial in determining how smooth your ride is.

Shock absorber

Shock absorbers, which are found in cars, dampen the impact of rough surfaces. They also improve the car's handling. Different materials can be used to make shock absorbers, and each one is capable of deforming in different ways. These devices also vary in how resistant they are to changes in temperature and pollution. It may sound complicated to describe a shock absorber, but once you know how it works, it becomes very easy. There are different types of shock absorbers available, which are designed to handle various types of road conditions and different kinds of vehicles.

Drive axle

The primary component in a car's drivetrain is its drive shaft. While many drivers may think they can replace the drive shaft by themselves, the reality is that a qualified mechanic is necessary to diagnose the problem and provide a safe and efficient solution. You should verify the warranty on your drive train before you bring your car in to the shop. Be aware of any unusual sounds or fluid leaks coming out of the drive axle. Keep an eye on your vehicle's weight limit. Overloading the car could cause damage to your drive axle.

Carbureted engine

Carbureted engines, also known as gasoline-powered engines, are those that use a wick or other means to draw air into a combustion chamber. Combustion is caused by fuel vapors when the air enters a chamber. Modern carburetors use Bernoulli principles. Air flows through a small venturi and delivers fuel proportionally to the volume of air entering the cylinder.

Dash top sensor

Automotive technology uses the term "dashtop sensor". These sensors monitor levels of brake fluid within the car. This sensor monitors the car's brake fluid and transmits this information to its dashboard in the form an electrical voltage. The sensor will notify you via a warning light at the dash if the level of brake fluid drops.

Slip coupling limited

There are many meanings to the term "limited slip coupling" in the automotive industry. The limited slip coupling engages with the secondary axle in an all-wheel-drive automatic system. This mechanism communicates information to a vehicle's computer that controls its driving characteristics. It also functions as the conduit for coolant from the engine's cooler system to its heater core. The following are examples of its importance: free running RPM (engine rpm with accessories off), ignition timings, and the engine's operating temperature.

M85 blend of 15% gasoline and 85% methanol

M85 is a fuel combination that includes 85% methanol (and 15% gasoline) and which is comparable to California's mid-grade gasoline. This blend is used in most modern vehicles. Flex-fuel vehicles have a sensor that detects the methanol content. This sensor informs the vehicle's computer which type of fuel it is so that it can adjust its ignition and injectors accordingly.

How To

How to become an automotive technician

An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she works in car dealerships as well as auto shops, garages, and service centers. He/she helps customers fix their cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, boats, lawn mowers, snowmobiles, tractors, trailers, farm equipment, planes, helicopters, jet skis, watercraft, bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, golf carts, etc. An automotive technician must know how to diagnose problems and perform repairs efficiently, safely, accurately, quickly, and correctly.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing the program, he/she must pass ASE certification. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. You must attend one of the authorized testing sites to take the test. These locations are available online or through your local automotive dealer.

A candidate must pass the state exam after passing the test to become an automotive technician. This process is different depending on where you live. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

An applicant should apply to a local auto shop in order to start their career as an automotive technician. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeships typically last three years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Some students are able to perform more advanced repairs such as replacing shocks and installing air filters. Schools offer classes during business hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

Once a student is done with his/her apprenticeship he/she can become a master journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts. Journeymen also learn to fix complicated problems, such as rebuilding engines or troubleshooting electric components. Many employers prefer hiring journeymen because they know the job well and understand what the customer expects.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010), almost 1.7million automotive mechanic jobs were on the market. That number was expected to grow by 18 percent from 2009 to 2020. If a candidate decides to open his/her own shop, he/she should prepare to invest many thousands of dollars in equipment and supplies.

There are many factors that affect the salary of an automotive technician, such as where they live, their education and experience. On average, an unemployed person could earn $20,000 annually. A person with only a high-school diploma could make around $21,000 annually. Earnings for those with an associate's diploma are approximately $24,000/year. Technicians with a bachelor’s degree made about $27,000 annually. And those with master's degrees made around $32,000 per year. Salary increases are common so professionals who make less than $30,000 a year could realistically expect to earn $40,000 over the next few years.
