What is the job description for a mechanic in a car?

There are three main areas of employment for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

It's where most people start to think about becoming a mechanic. It's also the easiest way you can get started. You have two options: work in an existing shop or open your own.

If you are interested in working at a shop you will need to apply for membership to a union. After being accepted into the union, the union will provide training.

Once the training is completed, you can start working.

You will need to register if your garage is going to be open. After registering, you'll be required to meet certain standards.

When you've registered, you'll be given a license to operate your garage.

Your license will allow you to sell spare parts and do minor repairs. It will not permit you to fix major engine issues.

You will be expected to sell spare parts and also offer guidance and advice to customers.

Dealership jobs

Many dealerships have mechanics who are experts in one particular area. They might be able to only fix brakes or replace tires.

However, dealerships may also employ general mechanics who are able to handle all aspects related to car repairs.

These positions often require applicants that they undergo special training before being allowed work. Employers are able to choose which candidates will best suit their position.

Some dealerships recruit students right out of school. These graduates are already familiar with basic mechanics and can therefore learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don't belong to any particular dealership. They tend to be focused on high-quality service.

Independent garages can pay higher wages because they aren't associated with any company. Because these jobs don't have to be associated with any company, they can generally offer better wages than dealerships.

Independent garages can be just as good places to work, but this does not mean they are better. Many owners prefer to run their businesses themselves rather than delegate responsibility to employees.

So you may find yourself working long hours without having any say over what happens during the day.

Additionally, you should expect to earn lower wages if employed by a dealership.

You can switch jobs easily. If you want to work at a dealership, then you simply need to ask your current employer if he would consider hiring you as a mechanic instead.

Alternatively, if you'd like to work at an independent garage, then you could try applying directly to the owner of the garage.

The bad news? Finding a new position isn't always easy. There are many other factors that can influence your earnings.

Consider, for example, what type of vehicle you are repairing and whether additional labor charges will apply.

Is it hard to be an apprentice mechanic?

It's not easy, but you learn fast, and there are many opportunities for advancement.

You will need patience and perseverance. You should also be able to repair cars, trucks, and motorbikes.

Customers and relatives can exert a lot on you. You shouldn't feel pressured to make decisions that you don't like.

This is a career that you might enjoy if you are passionate about fixing cars. This job allows you to make a decent wage and build up your company.

However, you might prefer to go down another route. In this case, you could consider becoming a technician instead.

This is where you use your technical skills to support other workers. Technicians could benefit from your technical expertise to solve problems or teach new techniques.

Another option is to be a service advisor. You will offer assistance and advice to customers when they bring cars to a garage.

Your decision will be based on what your priorities are. There are many options to choose from, and it is up to you which one suits you the best.

How To

How to Become an Auto Technician

An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she works at car dealerships, auto shops, garages, service centers, etc. Customers can rely on him/her to fix their cars, trucks and motorcycles. A technician in automotive must be able diagnose and repair problems quickly, safely, accurately, efficiently, and effectively.

To become an automotive technician, a person must first earn an associate's degree from a vocational college. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands to American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. One section tests knowledge of mechanical components, while the other section tests skills in practical areas. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. These locations can be found online or at your local auto dealer.

A candidate must pass the state exam after passing the test to become an automotive technician. This process is different depending on where you live. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states issue licenses to technicians as soon as they get their license. Others wait until they have worked at least six months as an automotive technician.

To get started as an automotive technician, a person should apply to a local automotive dealership. Once hired, most new employees start out working as apprentices. Apprenticeships typically last three years. This is when a student can learn how to do basic repairs such as changing oil, adjusting brakes and replacing tires. Some students are able to perform more advanced repairs such as replacing shocks and installing air filters. Many schools offer classes during normal business hours. However, some schools offer evening classes if needed.

Once a student completes his/her apprenticeship, he/she becomes a journeyman. Journeymen typically spend four to five years learning how to install major systems, such as transmissions, differentials, steering gear, suspensions, and drive shafts. They learn how to do complex repairs such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissives, and troubleshooting electronic components. Because they have a good understanding of the job and what customers expect, many employers prefer to hire journeymen.

Once a candidate passes the required exams and is granted a license, they might consider opening their own shop. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were almost 1.7 million available jobs in the automotive mechanic field in 2010. This number is expected to increase by 18% between 2009 and 2020. A candidate who plans to open a shop should expect to spend many thousands of dollars on equipment and supplies.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. A jobless person can expect to make $20,000 per year. Someone with only a high school diploma could earn around $21,000 per year. An associate's degree earns approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with a bachelor's degree earn about $27,000 per annum. The average annual salary for those with master's degrees was $32,000. Salaries are increasing so that a professional earning less than $30,000 could expect to make $40,000 in a few years.
